How To Change DNS Settings On LG Smart TV
In this article, I’ll guide you on how to change DNS Settings On an LG Smart TV and also explain about changing TV region on LG so you can download region-restricted apps.
What Is DNS Setting On Smart TV?
A DNS (Domain Name Server) is a gateway to the Internet. They convert easy-to-remember domain names into IP addresses. Think about the contacts app on your phone which converts into actual phone numbers when you’re calling someone.
The DNS settings allow you to change the DNS addresses so your device can communicate to a specified server rather than to your local Internet provider server. Often this is done when you want your TV to use a Smart DNS service to access TV channel apps.
How do I Change DNS Server On LG Smart TV?
- Press the Home/Start button on your remote to bring up your launcher bar.
- Click the Settings icon in the top-right.
- Choose the All Settings option at the bottom.
- Go to the Network menu from the left.
- Choose your current Wi-Fi connection.
- Select Advanced Wi-Fi Settings at the bottom.
- Click the Edit button.
- Uncheck the box labelled Set Automatically.
- Keep the value in IP address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway field as it is.
- Enter the DNS address you wish to use.
- Confirm with Connect.
Note: Restart your TV for the changes to take effect.
LG Smart TV Not Connecting To WiFi / Internet
You may need to restart your Internet router and TV. This often clears the problem with the connection. If you’re still having problems, please check on the IP/DNS settings on your TV and ensure they are entered correctly.
Failing that, the IP/DNS addresses you’ve entered no longer works and you will need to contact your service provider to solve this.
How Do I Install Apps On LG Smart TV Which Is Not Available In The LG Content Store?
First of all, please note that LG locks their TV by hardware level. In other words, if you purchase your LG TV in the United Kingdom, you will only be able to download European continent region-restricted apps.
Unfortunately, there is no way you will be able to download other region apps despite changing the TV’s region over SmartDNS / VPN.
How To Change LG Smart TV Region / Country?
1) Press the Settings button on the remote to access the All Settings page.
2) Click on General and select Location.
3) Now click LG Service Country.
4) Uncheck the option Set Automatically and select the country you wish to change the region to.
5) Once selected, click Yes to confirm changes.
6) Agree to the User Agreement to proceed with the change. Finally, restart your TV.
You should now have the country apps that you’ve switched to listed automatically on your TV.
How To Watch Geo-Blocked TV On LG Smart TV?
If you’re not in the country where the app was made available, you will be blocked from accessing it.
To bypass this restriction, you can use a Smart DNS service.
VPN For LG Smart TV
Generally, Smart TVs do not support VPN service.
However, if you still want to use a VPN service for your TV, I would suggest you get a second router and configure our VPN service on it. This method would leave you with your existing network which would be your local ISP and then a second router that would route your traffic via the VPN network. You would presumably then connect your TV to the VPN network.
Note: Using a single router solution is not recommended. It can be done, but the problem is that if there are any problems or issues with it, you have lost your connection to the Internet. If you set up a VPN on a secondary router, then any issues with VPN setup will not impact your local internet connection.
Conclusion
Changing DNS setting on your TV is pretty much straight forward but if you don’t see a such option, most likely your TV doesn’t support such a feature. To confirm this, you can check your TV’s manual and/or contact the TV manufacturer.
